What's good, everyone? Today is the final day of our spring member drive: a week-long event where we celebrate the ways in which Strong Towns members across the globe have used the Strong Towns message to make their communities stronger—and, hopefully, inspire you to become a member of the movement along the way.

Everyone who's joined and contributed to this Strong Towns Community—member or not—on behalf of the Strong Towns team, thank you: the questions you ask, the ideas you share, and the increasingly complex concepts you discuss, demonstrate the generosity of Strong Towns advocates—and through that generosity, we're excited to welcome a new crew of members during the spring member drive.

Exciting news out of Dallas, Texas: The City of Dallas recently announced that they will launch a temporary parklet program, allowing businesses to transform parking spaces into outdoor seating. As we wrote in our recent covid-response piece, Nine Things Local Governments Need to Do Right Now in Response to the Pandemic, low-lift interventions such as parklets encourage people to responsibly engage with their neighborhoods while supporting their local businesses. 

For reference, here's a sketch of a proposed parklet in Bishop Arts, a neighborhood in Dallas. 

I'd love to hear from you: If your city adopted a parklel program, where in the city do you think they would best serve the community? In my community, I'd think they'd work best in our downtown, where, as the demand for driving has decreased, several parking spaces sit empty outside of our local businesses.

Officially launched this spring, the Parking Reform Network is a new non-profit organization with, in its own words, “a mission to educate the public about the impact of parking policy on climate change, equity, housing, and traffic. Its goal is to inspire and support a nationwide network of parking reformers.”

Think of the network as a convener, a place where those interested in parking reform can:

• Find each other and network
• Help each other strategize about local parking issues
• Learn about the challenges and opportunities that other communities have encountered
• Share information, including resources such as up-to-date data and case studies
• Access turnkey materials for organizations to use, like the excellent Better Parking 101 pamphlet already developed by PRN board members Lindsay Bayley and Jane Wilberding.

Eventually, access such material support as printed literature, website hosting, and small grants to local parking reform groups.

The goal is simple: to get parking reform on the table in cities across America, and to ensure that when decision time comes, advocates for better parking policy show up and are counted.
